State of the State: Civics in Illinois

In 2015, HB 4025 was signed into law, requiring at least one semester of civics of the two years of social studies required for high school graduation. The law goes on to say that civics "shall help young people acquire and learn to use the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will prepare them to be competent and responsible citizens throughout their lives. Civics course content shall focus on government institutions, the discussion of current and controversial issues, service learning, and simulations of the democratic process. School districts may utilize private funding available for the purposes of offering civics education."
How is civics education being implemented in Illinois public schools? Dr. Shawn Healy will outline how the Robert R. McCormick Foundation and others have made this legislation alive through a three-year implementation process.

Continental breakfast, coffee, and tea will be provided. Please RSVP below.
