What CAC interns are working on this summer

5/13/2015

Legal Research
  • Students' right to petition the government - Legal interns will research questions associated with students' rights to petition within their schools and their school districts. Quesions include,"What rights do students have to petition within their school to try to change policies?"and "Are students' First Amendment rights protected differently within an academic environment?"
  • State public records laws that affect public-private partnerships
  • Question: Do SLAPP lawsuits need to name each person that testified in public hearings?
Government Surveys
  • Survey public bodies to obtain and evaluate their published public comment policies
  • Survey public bodies to determine if they post annual budgets online
  • Examples of tax increment financing (TIF) eligibility studies
Projects
  • Public Access Counselor (PAC) Determination Letter Project - In reviewing complaints of violations of FOIA and OMA, the Public Access Counselor issues written decisions, the majority of which are not published on the Illinois Attorney General website. Thanks to the cooperation of the Public Access Counselor, CAC will continue to catalog these decisions and make them available to the public in conjunction with the Chicago Headline Club.  CAC receives generous support from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation for this ongoing project.
  • Guide for Public Participation: Create a how-to guide of best practices to become an active citizen in local government.
  • Update two of CAC's most referenced publications: Guide to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Guide to the Illinois Open Meetings Act (OMA) to reflect legislative changes and include best practices for citizens.
Intakes
  • Legal questions, community organizing and government monitoring assistance requested from citizens who contact us in person, via email, or by phone!
